Despite being so far from the sea, Birmingham has a long history of support for the RNLI. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, the people of Birmingham and the West Midlands have directly funded over 50 lifeboats. The most recent is the Trent class lifeboat Forward Birmingham, formerly stationed at Exmouth now on the relief fleet, the money for which was raised from a city wide appeal in 1995 and 1996. When you take into account the fact that each all weather lifeboat now costs almost £2 million the City has raised an incredible amount of money. The average annual funds raised are around £200,000 for the West Midlands of which around £70,000 is from Birmingham.
Following the appeal to raise funds for the new Tamar lifeboat for Angle in S.wales the new boat 16-11 Mark Mason was delivered on 17 March 2009 .
The 2009 provisional launch figures have been published :-
RNLI lifeboats launched 9,154 times saving 8,186 people. The Beach Lifeguards dealt with 13,588 incidents assisting 15,954 people. The busiest year in the Charities 186 year history.
